As a Marvel Comics fan, collector, and historian it has been torturous to wait for the next Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film to debut. Not being a fan of Agents of SHIELD and now with the demise of the wonderful Agent Carter our wait seems darker than before. All is not lost, Disney ‘XD is here to fill the void with three seasons of the underrated animated Avengers Assemble. This series with its 78 episodes, fills in the gaps between the films and branches out into its own storylines and heroes not seen in the MCU.
Avengers Assemble alongside Ultimate Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy share a continuity with the MCU and share the same creative force. The animated Avengers changes one major detail from the MCU — Falcon is the newest member of the Avengers and is a young SHIELD Agent that becomes an Avenger with the help of Tony Stark. Falcon becomes the main eyes and ears of the viewer as he fights evil and saves the world and learns his place within the team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
We have been really enjoying this series because of its blend of MCU characterization and Marvel Comic storylines. The voice actors do a pretty amazing job to match the sound and attitude of the MCU film actors; Iron Man, Captain America and Black Widow are spot on with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal. The film versions could learn a few things from the animated Thor, Hulk, and Hawkeye. The animated version of Hulk is one of the best joys of the series as well as his relationship with Thor and the other Avengers. The balance of Bruce Banner and the Hulk is the best we have ever seen on the screen.
Season One starts with the Red Skull, dying due to his imperfect Super Soldier Serum, teaming up with MODOK to kidnap Captain America. Red Skull wants MODOK to help him transfer his mind to Captain America’s body. After his defeat by a reassembled team of the Avengers, Red Skull steals Iron Man’s armor for its life support system and becomes the Iron Skull. The newly empowered Iron Skull with MODOK forms a evil team, the Cabal, to defeat the Avengers and support Skull’s dream of world domination.
Season Two kicks off with Thanos gaining the Tesseract and the Avengers trying to stop his hunt for the Infinity Gems. Season Two also sees the Avengers defend humanity against a reborn Ultron that will push the boundaries of the Avengers and give rise to the animated version of Civil War. If that wasn’t enough the Avengers, even when divided, must defeat the alien Squadron Supreme from blowing up the Earth.
The current Season Three sees the Avengers on a break and working on their own pursuits until Ultron returns once again with an unbeatable plan to destroy the Avengers. Captain America’s past comes back to haunt him and unleashes the evil of Baron Zemo and the Masters of Evil. The Thunderbolts arrive of the scene as well as the dark Lord Dormammu. We are just in the beginning episodes of Season Three and we expect a lot more is yet to come!
All three seasons so far have featured great Superheroes and Villains from across the Marvel Universe like; Doctor Doom, Doctor Strange, Ant-man, Bucky, Dracula, Thing, Spider-man Vision, Kang, Ms Marvel, Ultron, and Attuma just to name some of our favorites. All three season can be found of the Disney ‘XD channel and website. If you can’t wait for the next MCU film and you need your Marvel Fix check out these animated gems and you can’t go wrong.
